Daring the dark!

The sirens started wailing. We looked at each other and ran helter skelter.
One could hear the anxiety in the nervous laughter as the boys and girls ran back home , from the park, remembering their parents warning,”Reach home before it gets dark!” And “Blackout when the sirens wail!”
Oh no! No lights, means no lifts….. trudging up the steps, young feet pitter-pattered in a bid to reach the familiar surroundings of ‘home’!
Putting on a brave face, which none could see in the dark and adopting a couldn’t care less tone which couldn’t hide the fear, whispers abounded. But being together, bound by a common crime, the partners hurried on, pulling along those who fumbled and tumbled!
Silence!
Only the heavy breathing punctuated the unending crepuscule in the stairwell.
And then came the distant hum, becoming shriller as they approached. For a moment all froze!
Then came a burst of speed, a flurry as the little feet raced to their darkened rooms, into the warm arms of their parents, and safety from the enemy warplanes!
